Print-and-Apply or Pre-Printed Labels: Which System Fits?

When is print-and-apply appropriate?

Print-and-apply is appropriate where the label content changes by pack, batch, order, pallet or destination and must be generated close to application. The project should define the data source, label format, printer technology, application position, verification, error response and how the line prevents the wrong data being applied to the wrong item.

Variable-data printing adds operational dependencies: the correct message must arrive, the printer must be ready, print quality must be acceptable and the printed label must transfer to the applicator. Define what happens on a missing field, communications loss, low consumable, unreadable code or failed label-present check.

When is a pre-printed label applicator appropriate?

A pre-printed label applicator is appropriate when the required decorative or static information is already on a converted label roll. It can simplify line data interfaces, but roll identity, artwork revision, unwind direction, label detection and format control remain important. Variable date or batch information can be added by a separate coder if the design permits.

How should data and verification be controlled?

Define the authorised data source, the exact fields sent, the event that releases a label, the association between label and pack and the response to missing, duplicate or invalid data. A printer reporting that it accepted a message does not prove that the final label is present, readable or applied to the intended pack.

Separate checks can include print presence, barcode or text verification, label presence, position and reject confirmation. The required checks depend on the application and quality system. State which failures stop the line, which create a reject and how rejected packs and unused printed labels are controlled.

How do throughput and application method affect the choice?

The required sustained acceptable output must include printing, label dispensing, application, verification and recovery, not only a nominal printer speed. The pack surface and presentation determine whether the label is wiped on, tamped, blown or applied by another suitable mechanism. Large labels or long print jobs can extend the cycle.

Provide the range of pack heights, application faces and conveyor positions. Include the least stable package and the most demanding label. A side label on a consistently guided carton presents a different task from a top label on flexible bags or a shipping label on cases with variable height.

What should be supplied for a print-and-apply or pre-printed-label trial?

Supply representative packs, production-equivalent label stock, final or controlled sample artwork, required variable data, code standards where applicable and the intended verification method. Include the data interface description for print-and-apply and the roll specification for pre-printed labels. Test line stops, missing labels, unreadable prints and format change.
