How Should a Label Roll Be Specified for an Automatic Labeller?

It must be considered with the real container surface, orientation and application position. Supply production labels and containers because adhesive behaviour, liner release and print-to-cut variation cannot be confirmed from artwork alone.

The label is a functional machine component. The web must unwind, be detected, peel from the liner and meet the container at a controlled speed and angle. A visually acceptable result also depends on the pack being clean, stable and presented consistently.

What label-roll data is needed?

Provide a dimensioned label construction showing label width and length, repeat pitch, gap, web width, edge position, core size, roll diameter and unwind direction. Add the material, adhesive, liner, print registration, shape, corner radius and any marks used for sensing or coding. State whether the information is nominal or measured from production stock.

Why does label roll unwind direction matter?

Unwind direction determines which edge reaches the peel plate first and the orientation in which printed information reaches the container. The same artwork wound in another direction may apply upside down, backwards or from the wrong edge. Confirm the direction using a labelled diagram or physical roll rather than an ambiguous verbal description.

Where the label must align to a handle, moulded panel, closure or existing print, show the reference relationship. If a printer or coder is fitted before application, define the printable area, data orientation and distance from the label edge so the print head, sensor and applicator can be arranged together.

How are transparent labels detected?

Transparent labels can be difficult for a conventional optical gap sensor because the label and liner may transmit similar amounts of light. The correct detection method depends on the label construction; options can include a suitable clear-label sensor or a consistent registration mark designed into the web. Confirm detection with the actual converted roll.

Do not assume the face material description alone proves reliable sensing. Adhesive, liner coating, printing, varnish, multiple layers and the gap can all affect the signal. Test the production construction, including any change of converter or material that could alter sensor response.

How do adhesive and container surface affect label application?

The adhesive must suit the container material, surface energy, temperature, moisture, contamination and service condition. The machine can place and wipe the label, but it cannot compensate for an adhesive that is unsuitable for the pack or for condensation, oil, dust or release agent on the application area.

Describe whether the pack is cold, warm, wet, flexible or recently filled. On tapered, curved or squeezable containers, label shape and conformability can matter as much as applicator adjustment. For front-and-back labels, provide both rolls and define their relationship to the container datum.

What samples are needed for a labelling trial?

Supply complete production rolls and representative containers, not loose labels alone. Include every label construction, container format and known difficult condition. If final printed stock is unavailable, any trial roll should match the intended dimensions, liner, adhesive, stiffness and unwind direction and should be clearly identified as provisional.
